Envelope Protection is smarter Hurricane Protection

Hurricane Fabric’s product highlights the term envelope protection.

This term means that when the system is used directly over glass, the glass may break if something hits your window. Most Hurricane Fabric screens, however, are used for larger openings such as porch enclosures and large storefront areas.

Envelope protection can allow for significant savings in screen costs when deflection spacing is not used. On areas such as porches and loggia’s, the screen is already safely away from the glass and areas to be protected. Direct mount systems over windows are smarter, than rigid metal panels or lexan. Even though accordion shutters, and metal panels do give impact protection, what is the cost?

If you factor in the cost of an accordion shutter vs. hurricane screens—an object can break the window multiple times (as unlikely as this is, as wind and design pressure are much more likely to break glass than an object during a storm) before the cost savings of the hurricane accordions justify themselves.

If a very low pressure, high velocity hurricane threatens your structure such as a Category 4 or 5, it’s much more likely that the hurricane screens will protect your structure while the accordions may tear off the building. So, is protecting the glass a smart idea? The answer is always, but not at the expense or safety of people or children is involved.

Airport control towers have taken down accordion shutters to install fabric because of this fact. Storeowners who lease their space only want to protect the contents of their structure and not the glass that they do not own. And families, when simple math is done choose envelope protection for the worst case safety advantages that hurricane screens provide.

Choose fabric, the lower cost safer way to protect.

Choose hurricane protection fabric and be safer during a hurricane!
